Escalator Parts

Escalators, fixed electrically driven devices with circularly rotating steps, are widely used to transport passengers upward or downward between different floors of a building. Their operating principle relies on a traction main unit that drives the steps or pallets in a circular motion via a drive chain. Furthermore, escalators cleverly combine specialized chain conveyors and belt conveyors to create an efficient and safe conveying system.
An escalator consists of four core systems
The step system consists of multiple independent metal steps with anti-slip grooves and yellow warning lines. Each step has two sets of wheels at its base: the front wheels are fixed to the drive chain via step pins, while the rear wheels slide along the inner rails. By varying the track spacing, the steps transition from a stepped shape on the slope to a flat surface at the ends. The steps interlock with each other through slots, forming a continuous running surface.
The drive unit
Located within the top truss, comprises a large motor, a gear train, and a main shaft. The motor drives the large gears on both sides through gear reduction, pulling the endless drive chain, which in turn pulls the step chain. The handrail is linked to the main shaft via independent smaller chains, ensuring synchronization with the steps.
The guide rail system consists of two inner and outer tracks
The front wheels run on the outer drive chain track, while the rear wheels slide along the inner track. Track design is crucial for changing the step angle: the bottom tracks converge to create an inclined staircase, while the top tracks separate to restore the steps to a flat surface. Comb plates at both ends precisely engage the steps to prevent foreign objects from getting stuck.
Handrail System
The rubber handrail runs on a pulley track, driven by a friction wheel driven by a dedicated drive sprocket. It runs slightly faster than the steps to prevent passengers from leaning on them. Safety brushes are installed on both sides to prevent clothing from getting caught in the edges.
Safety protection mechanisms include a mechanical pawl brake (to prevent overspeeding/reverse travel), step collapse protection, and chain break protection, all integrated into the steel truss frame.
Escalator maintenance requirements strictly adhere to national technical specifications and safety management systems, primarily encompassing the following key areas:
Maintenance Cycle and Items

Basic Maintenance Frequency
Routine maintenance every 15 days, including cleaning, lubrication, and fastener inspection.
Monthly special inspections: brake performance testing and step chain tension testing.
Quarterly Maintenance
Comprehensive inspection of the electrical system's safety circuits and sensor sensitivity.
Measure the gap between the step and the apron (must be ≤4mm).

Annual Mandatory Inspection
Perform a running test at 1.25 times the rated load.
Evaluate the wear condition of the drive chain; the safety factor must be ≥5.
